Cullen called Sarah first thing in the morning, to explain the situation. He had already made the decision that he wouldn’t now be returning up north that day, as planned. He needed to be here, to take forward the potential investigation. But he wanted Sarah’s blessing, and he wanted to be able to explain.
The last thing he wanted was for another rift to develop between them.
Sarah was understanding if obviously disappointed at the news.
‘It will just be a few days,’ Cullen promised. ‘Just long enough for me to determine whether this is actually our investigation or not. And if it is, I’ll hand over to Danny and he can take things forward.’
‘Are you sure you’ll be able to resist the temptation?’ Sarah replied.
Cullen knew just what she was getting at. Yes, it was difficult sometimes to let go of an investigation, to hand it to a colleague, but he trusted DI Lomax completely and knew that he would do a good job.
‘I want to come back up to you as soon as I can,’ he replied. ‘I promise I won’t be any longer than I have to.’
‘I’ll hold you to that,’ she said.
‘I’ll prove it,’ he said. ‘The idea I had for Philip that I mentioned. Wigan Warriors have these special matchday experiences for people with dementia. Wigan’s game with St Helens at the weekend, I’ll contact the club first thing tomorrow, see if there’s a space for me and Phil to go. If there is, I’ll book it.’
‘You don’t need to prove anything to me,’ Sarah said. ‘And what if something doesn’t go to plan this week? You might not be able to keep your promise. Even though you want to.’
‘No, I’ll be back,’ he insisted. ‘I’ll give the club a ring and hopefully there’ll be a space.’
